Good morning everyone,
Today, we gather to reflect on a solemn occasion — National Anti-Terrorism Day. Observed on May 21st each year, this day reminds us of our collective responsibility to uphold peace, harmony, and human dignity. It is not just a date on the calendar; it is a call to action against violence, hatred, and extremism.
National Anti-Terrorism Day commemorates the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1991. His tragic death was not only a loss to the nation but also a stark reminder of how terrorism affects every layer of society — from families to governments. This day is meant to raise awareness about the impact of terrorism and to encourage unity against such destructive forces.
Terrorism, by definition, is the use of violence to create fear for political or ideological goals. It recognizes no borders, no religion, and no humanity. From local bombings to global terror networks, terrorism threatens innocent lives, economies, and peace.
In recent years, we have seen how terrorism can strike at the heart of democracy. Public spaces like markets, places of worship, and schools have become targets. The aim is always the same — to spread fear, divide communities, and weaken the spirit of free nations.
But fear cannot be the answer. Our strength as a nation lies not in the number of weapons we hold, but in the values we protect — freedom, tolerance, and justice. National Anti-Terrorism Day is a reminder that each of us has a role to play in defending these values.
This day is also an opportunity to honor the brave men and women in uniform — our armed forces, police officers, intelligence agencies, and first responders. These heroes put their lives at risk every day to ensure our safety. Their courage, vigilance, and sacrifice form the first line of defense against terrorism.
It is worth noting how significant days like Armed Forces Day align closely with this spirit of duty and patriotism. While one honors service and commitment, the other urges citizens to understand what we stand to lose if we allow terrorism to win.
We must also recognize that the fight against terrorism is not only military or strategic. It is also moral and ideological. The roots of terrorism often grow in places where ignorance, injustice, and inequality thrive. Therefore, promoting education, dialogue, and inclusion is just as important as securing borders.
Let us teach our young people to question hate and value humanity. Let us not allow narrow ideologies to overshadow the greatness of a diverse and secular nation. Social media, while a powerful tool, must not become a playground for extremist propaganda. We need digital literacy and awareness to spot and stop misinformation before it becomes a threat.
Citizens must remain alert. Suspicious activities or behaviors should be reported promptly. But equally, we must avoid suspicion that is rooted in bias. Terrorism must be condemned in all its forms, regardless of who commits it or why.
India, as a nation, has shown extraordinary resilience. From the Mumbai attacks to the Pulwama tragedy, we have stood tall, mourned our losses, and moved forward with strength and unity. This is the spirit we must nurture — not vengeance, but resolve; not hatred, but courage.
Our Constitution guarantees justice, liberty, and equality. It is our duty to defend these principles, especially when they are under threat. On this day, schools, colleges, and offices across the country observe silence, take pledges, and discuss ways to promote harmony.
Let me also share that other observances around this time, like the International Day of Light, remind us of the symbolic power of light over darkness. Terrorism represents darkness, fear, and death. Our response must be light — awareness, unity, and peace.
Before I conclude, I urge everyone present here to take a moment and reflect. Ask yourselves — what kind of future do we want? One where our children live in fear or one where they live with freedom and dignity?
Let’s choose peace. Let’s choose humanity.
On this National Anti-Terrorism Day, let us pledge to never remain silent in the face of hate. Let us commit to building a nation where every citizen feels safe, heard, and respected.
Thank you, and Jai Hind.
